A LITTLE COMFORT (travelling exhibit)

A Slow Budding

It's something so uniquely beautiful about how the body will make certain shifts along with the seasons. I'm reminded of how older people can tell when the rains are about to arrive. They can "feel" it in their bones. I never thought much about this until my mom started having her spinal issues as well as her bouts of arthritis. For me, right now, I'm feeling a slow but delightful energy shift internally. I feel slightly more light and much less heavy. Upon waking, I did twenty minutes of  Ashtanga yoga. For those of you who are familiar with the Ashtanga practice, you know how challenging it can be. It sometimes take years to just get the rhythm and centuries to actually complete the practice successfully and fully. Nevertheless, as I softly practiced, I heard a quote from one of the great gurus in India say: "Body not stiff, mind is stiff".

As we approach the nearing of spring, I think a lot about how a slow budding takes place between the body and mind, the introduction of an agreement that harmony can exist between the two. An integration process that gives us the opportunity to release new thoughts, new actions and a flexibility to be agile in the face of what lies before us. I live for each season because the answers can always be found in nature. People will always gripe about how we can no longer tell when the next season comes because, "This weather is so crazy!" No, my friends. Take a little time if you can to listen. Your body and your mind will always tell you what season you are in.

What are your thoughts about what it means for the mind to be “stiff”?
For years I’ve tried to be in sync with the seasons, and now that I’m questioning spirituality I’m unsure what exactly that means to me, but it still gives me comfort, to think of aligning myself with what is vast and permanent. My favorite place in Colorado during my years there was the east entrance to Big Thompson Canyon because the rock walls are so enormous and seemingly immovable that anything I’ve been troubled about seems so insignificant by comparison
